How To Decorate a Dorm, Room Divider Ideas

Thank god no more curfews and no more mom and dad telling me what to do.  Isn't going off to college exciting?  Now that you are going to be away from your high school time capsule of a room with all your favorite band posters, you have a little bit of a decorating challenge ahead.  Most likely you will be sharing the room with somebody else so decorating tastes may clash.  However there is one thing both roommates that share the same room can agree upon...a little bit of privacy and separation doesn't hurt.

Most dorm rooms can be the size of prison cells.  Some prison cells may be even bigger than your typical dorm room.  My freshman dorm in college was so small, I had to throw the pet gerbil out the window to make more room.  A stylish way you can solve some privacy issues is with a folding screen room divider.  There are some great ideas of how you can decorate your dorm room with style and function. There are over 150 different art print themed double sided room dividers to choose from.  From the worlds greatest photography to impressionist paintings and vintage art.  Make a bold statement in your dorm room while adding function.

You will need a little privacy with some stylish art print widow blinds.  Nothing is more unattractive and institutional than those rolling beige curtains that never stay down or never roll up.  These art print window blinds are made from bamboo with high saturated ink to create a visual delight and uniqueness to  your room.  I personally guarantee your dorm neighbors or suite mates will compliment your original taste in
 decor.

Lastly, what better way to store your little items in attractive functional storage drawers.  Let's face it, the dorms only provide you with a desk and a small closet if your lucky.  There is nothing more hideous than those disgusting synthetic plastic drawers that are not biodegradable.  A suggestion for added storage space for small items is natural woven fiber rush grass.  Strong, durable and lightweight, these storage drawers come in many different sizes and colors.  They make great end tables and nightstands, lingerie chest.  Great for bathrooms as well.

How to Use Room Dividers and Folding Screens

Room dividers have many different functions.  They can be used to divide a space as well as define a space and let's not forget they're also used to accentuate a space.  Let's first discuss how room dividers can be used to define the function of living within the same given space.

Small spaces or studio apartments can serve many different functions in one room.  We eat, sleep, work, and sit in the same room.  A living room is usually adjacent to the kitchen, as well as the dining area.  Many small apartments do not have a separate room for dining.  A room divider is a great idea to have to define the area.  In small spaces we need to give the mind an illusion of a more defined living area so we don't feel like we are living in a prison cell.  Now depending on the layout of the room, you should choose the right size room divider.  If you have an alcove dining area, perhaps you would like to use a taller 4 or more panel screen.  If you do not have an alcove dining area, then a lower, or shorter divider is a good idea so it appears the room is more flowing and not as cramped.

Another function we do in the same space is work.  Many people will set up their computer desk in their living space.  If you do that, it is important to  section off or define that space.  A shorter divider is recommended so one is able to see the room when sitting down at their desk.

Next, a room divider can be used in a corner behind a plant or lamp.  These make great backdrops and add depth to your space.  There's always room in some corner of a room for an interesting accent piece.

Decorative head boards.  In my experience as a furniture salesman, many young people buy a headboard many months after they buy their basic bed.  What better way to give your bed frame a little character than adding a decorative folding screen.  It may not keep your pillow from falling, but it will look quite beautiful.

Art print room dividers with various themes can be used in so many ways.  Asides from its residential use, it also has many commercial uses as well.  If you own let's say an Italian restaurant, or other ethnic restaurant, you could browse the selection of  "international landmarks" with different travel posters and photographs from around the world.

The picture below shows a common living room dining room layout in a nice size New York City apartment.  A room divider would fit perfectly in this configuration of the room to separate the dining alcove from the living room.  If you notice, the picture is taken from the entry way when you walk into the apartment.  The room divider will give an illusion of the two rooms being separate which adds more depth.

Art print room dividers can also make great backdrops and accents for trade shows and events.  With so many themes to choose from, there should be a screen to match the theme of an event you're hosting.

A Guide for Using Room Dividers for your Business and home

One thing I find very useful for these art print room dividers is that they are not only used to divide a section of a room, but also can be used in various ways.  Retail stores can use them as a back drop for the window display merchandising.  Lets say you have a clothing boutique.  There are many different screens you could use.  The Mannequin screen is one of the most popular designs.  This screen comes in 3 or 4 panels.  The vintage theme screens are also quite useful for retail stores.  Another way you could use it is at a trade show, or flea market.  From all the different screens available. There should be one that fits your theme of what you are promoting or selling.  Lastly for those people that produce their own video blogs for youtube or other video sharing websites.  These different themed screens make a nice backdrop for when you are talking in front of the camera.  This helps hide any clutter, or personal items that should be concealed.

Trying to purchase a nightstand, side table, chest of drawers and other storage solutions can be quite difficult especially when you don't have the time or means of transporting such items.  There is an inexpensive solution for this.  We have all seen the plastic storage bins and drawers that are commonly sold at the container store.  These can be nice but they have no aesthetic appeal and don't always fit nicely with the existing decor of the room.  There are many rattan and wicker pieces that can be quite expensive.  Wouldn't it be nice to have a cheaper yet attractive natural looking storage pieces in your room?  There are now storage drawers made from natural spun tough plant fiber cords.  Pieces are available in 2,3,4, and 5 drawers with or without wheels. How to Use a Room Divider in Small Spaces

If you currently live, or are about to move to a studio or efficiency apartment, there are a few things you should take into consideration. First, you realize that since there is only one room, you need to create a way of defining your function of living.  Since your living space and sleeping space are in the same room, it becomes an aesthetic and psychological necessity to conceal your bed from the rest of your space.

(studio floor plan square shape)

There's nothing more "college dorm like" than to walk into your own apartment and see a bed in your living room next to a chair or sofa.  So what is the most inexpensive solution?

An inexpensive solution is a simple folding screen room divider.  There is always an option to put up a temporary high pressurized wall, however this can get quite costly and it will also make the room feel even smaller than it already is.  There are a number of ways you can section off your bed from the rest of the room.
(this appears to be a king size bed..again with a bed in the living area with no separation)

Depending on the shape of your room, you can either use a 3 or 4 panel room divider.  A 3 panel room divider will full extend to under 50" wide.  A full size bed is 54" wide and a queen size is 60" wide.  Keep in mind that the bed doesn't have to be completely hidden, it just has to be separated.  If you purchase a three panel room divider to section off the bed, it is recommended to get the floor stand.  The floor stand will hold the screen in place so it fully extends to its maximum length, as well as preventing it from getting knocked over.  A 4 panel room divider should stand up well on its own and it should be long enough to cover the width of a queen size bed.

(this is a decorating no-no..fully exposed bed)

Let's say your room is more square rather than rectangular shape.  This means that you really can only conceal either the front or side of the bed.  The easy solution to this problem is getting a 6 panel screen which can wrap around the front and part of the side of the bed.  Remember that your bed doesn't have to be completely hidden, and it is not an aesthetic faux pas to have a little of it exposed.  The room divider folding screen is perfect and inexpensive for defining your space in a studio apartment.
